How to use MotionBuilder’s Control Rig to Edit Mocap

By Mocappy Leave a Comment

Following on from the walk cycle we created in the last tutorial, in this video I’ll show you how to use MotionBuilder’s Control Rig to edit the walk and give it that final layer of polish.

The Control Rig is MotionBuilder’s Full Body FK/IK character rig and while it’s perfect for motion editing, the names and behavior can be a little confusing at first.

So, to help you avoid some of that pain and frustration, I’ll show you 3 things you need to understand to get started:

  1. How IK Blend works and when to use it.
  2. Why editing key frames in the FCurves window can sometimes have no effect.
  3. What Pinning does do and why it doesn’t always seem to be doing it.

p.s. and all this also applies to the Control Rig in Maya…

Hi, I’m Simon

I’m a Motion Capture & MotionBuilder specialist. I help animators and studios go from mocap-curious to mocap-confident – helping them transform raw mocap into production-ready, life-like animations.

Over the last 20+ years I’ve helped bring hundreds of characters to life for studios like DNEG, Sony Interactive, and Centroid Motion Capture – now I teach those same MotionBuilder and mocap workflows through tutorials, courses and training.
