If you’ve ever walked onto a mocap stage and felt completely out of your depth — you’re not alone.

A mocap stage can feel like stepping into a different world.

Strange sets. Weird costumes. A vast empty space surrounded by technology — and the knowledge that every second is costing money.

Everyone else seems to know exactly what to do while throwing around technical terms you've never heard.

You don’t want to be the person slowing the day down.
So you nod, you guess, and you hope nothing goes wrong.

Here's what makes the difference:

Understanding how your decisions on the shoot affect the final data. That's what separates smooth productions from costly post-production nightmares.

This masterclass gives you hands-on experience on a professional mocap stage—so you understand the connection before it costs you.

Why I Built This Masterclass

There's rarely time on set to stop and explain what's happening, and even less time to ask questions that might sound basic.

This masterclass gives you that time.

A full day inside a professional mocap studio.

Time to explore the process, make mistakes, ask questions, and understand how everything works—before you're on a real production.

You'll experience the entire workflow: calibration → direction → performance → capture → data.

By the end of the day, you'll know how to capture clean, usable data and spot the difference between fixable and expensive mistakes.

You'll be able to make confident creative and technical decisions on set, work collaboratively with the crew, and avoid the costly errors that waste expensive stage time

What You’ll Learn

If you’ve ever left a mocap shoot with more questions than answers, this masterclass is designed for you.

We’ll slow everything down, go step-by-step through each stage, and show exactly how the pieces fit together — so you finally understand what’s happening on the stage, on the screen, and in the data.

This isn't theory — it's hands-on experience in a real mocap volume with professional equipment, live decision-making, and the time pressure of an actual shoot.

  • The complete mocap workflow — from suit-up and calibration through performance capture to final data deliver
  • How the technology works — suits, markers, HMCs, and what the cameras are actually tracking (and why it matters for your performance)
  • Professional terminology in context — hearing "just roms to do" or "we need to refine" live and understanding what's happening
  • How movement translates to data in real-time — seeing instantly how your physical choices become the raw data animators work with (and what breaks it)
  • In-Game animation capture — performing and directing cycles, idles, locomotion, transitions with the clarity and consistency games demand
  • Cinematic cutscene capture — maintaining full commitment while managing props, blocking, technical notes, and the knowledge that every second costs money
  • What makes data unusable — experiencing firsthand how occlusion, marker issues, and performance choices create problems you can't fix later
  • Real-time problem-solving — making on-set decisions about what needs fixing now vs. what can wait for post (before it becomes expensive)
  • Animators & Directors

This masterclass gives you the confidence to make smart decisions under pressure. By seeing how performances translate onto characters in real-time, overcoming technical limitations first-hand, and understanding how changes on-set can impact work later, you'll arrive on your next shoot knowing exactly what matters.

You won't waste time second-guessing technical requirements or hoping problems can be fixed in post — you'll recognise issues immediately, communicate effectively with the crew, and capture clean, usable data because you understand the direct connection between stage decisions and your post-production workload.

  • Actors & Performers

This masterclass removes the overwhelm from your next mocap shoot. By experiencing the abstract environment, technical constraints, and the forensic nature of the technology in a safe learning space, you'll arrive on set already understanding what's expected.

You won't be distracted by the lycra suit, the technical language, or wondering if you're doing it right—you'll be free to focus entirely on your performance. The volume will feel familiar, the director's notes will make sense, and you'll deliver film-quality work with total commitment because you've already navigated the chaos once before.

These aren't things you can learn from tutorials or books—they require hands-on experience in a real mocap volume with professional equipment, time pressure, and live decision-making.

You’ll understand the difference between what’s seen live and what’s delivered later, and you’ll know how to avoid costly mistakes before they happen.

You’ll leave with the confidence to step onto any mocap stage — knowing exactly what’s happening, what to ask, and how to deliver your best work.

Meet Your Instructor

Hi, I'm Simon, a Motion Capture Supervisor and Specialist.

With 20+ years of experience across film, games, and immersive technology, I've helped bring hundreds of characters to life for Hollywood blockbusters like Avengers, Oscar winners like Tenet, and indie favourites like Paul. I've been on hundreds of mocap shoots—and I've seen every way things can go right and wrong.

That's why I created this masterclass: to give actors, performers, directors, and animators the critical skills you can only learn by actually being in the volume. This is two decades of experience distilled into one intensive day—so you're ready the next time you step onto a mocap stage.
